  • Mingei Philosophy Matsumoto Lifestyle, Simple Beyond Beauty

  • The otherworldly beauty of the Mingei spirit.
Born as an inevitable product of the culture
    out of nature and tradition.
The name has been cultivated and polished
by the passing of time and accumulation of history.
There within lies the essence of beauty.
Though plain and simple, it is natural and
    familiar like water,
    and thus comfortable and familiar.
Time spent in a natural present state.
    Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu,
a rustic hotel for everyday use.

  • Mingei Spirit is rooted in the land of Matsumoto

  • Mingei Spirit is rooted in the land of Matsumoto

  • The art of Mingei is not ‘owned’ by any specific artist. It was born and cultivated through an everyday lifestyle and refers to items designed with such a purpose in mind.

The beauty of Mingei style is a simple causal beauty. Its beauty grows as the patina of everyday life accumulates. Nameless craftsmen have passed down their study of the art and its simple functional beauty. It is the essence of simplicity that facilitates the true beauty of Mingei.

The Mingei spirit that bred Matsumoto folk art furniture thrives today as it did in years past. Similar to how the beauty of the earth is superimposed in everyday lifestyle, we welcome you here at Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu, as a hotel that reflects the Mingei spirit.

  • The impressive stained glass entrance creates a grand inviting space full of expectation. Dishes made from local ingredients that yearn to ‘be created’. The energy from the ingredients of the land is condensed and transformed into rustic yet modern creations via “Nagano Terroir” and delivered to you on your plate.

  • The name of the restaurant is taken from a colloquial phrase from Nagano history and culture, in a sense a “terroir words”, meaning “Let’s go”. Thus, the restaurant is - [I;caza]. The supervising chef at [I;caza] is chef Ueno who was previously executive chef at Agora Hotel Alliance hotel Kyu Karuizawa Hotel. Ueno was trained at the 5 star Hotel de Crillon in Paris, was the deputy chef of the Beige Alain Ducasse Tokyo, and was a chef at Le Comptoir Benoit Osaka. He now displays his talents as the chef of dishes that yearn to ‘be created’ in the form of “Nagano Terroir”.

  • After stints at restaurants and hotels in Japan, Mr. Ueno traveled to Europe in 2002. Following his training in Paris, the homeland of French cuisine, he studied under the famous young talented French chef Jean-Francois Piege and worked at the five-star Hotel de Crillon restaurant Les Ambassadeurs. In 2007 he returned to Japan and was appointed Deputy Executive Chef at Beige Alain Ducasse Tokyo. In 2012 Alain Ducasse, a giant of the French cuisine world, showed his tremendous confidence in Mr. Ueno by appointing him Executive Chef of Le Comptoir de Bennoit Osaka. From July of 2015 he joined Agora as the Executive Chef of our Alliance Hotel Kyu Karuizawa Hotel. From 2016 he is the chef supervisor at Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu. He is dedicated to “extracting the essence of each ingredient and tailoring its preparation method to allow its flavor to shine.”
